We’re proud to share that Argyll has officially been awarded Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) accreditation by The Carbon Literacy Project, a meaningful recognition of our commitment to building a more sustainable, carbon-aware organisation.

What is carbon literacy?

Carbon Literacy is defined as “an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.”

The Carbon Literacy Project works with organisations across the UK and beyond to embed this awareness into workplace culture, helping teams make more informed, lower-carbon choices every day.

How we got here

After completing an external Carbon Literacy training course and a Train the Trainer programme, our Carbon Literacy champion developed the skills to bring this learning in-house. We created a bespoke Carbon Literacy course for Argyll – reviewed and approved by The Carbon Literacy Project before being rolled out internally.

Our champion has since trained 60 colleagues across the business, with senior leaders among the first to take part. To support our accreditation, we also produced a short film showcasing how Carbon Literate pledges are being woven into our day-to-day operations and broader ESG strategy, and setting out our ambitions for the road ahead.

Those pledges are very much alive – each trained team member is actively working on their individual commitments, all of which bring us closer to Silver accreditation.

What this means for Argyll

This accreditation reflects the meaningful steps we’ve already taken to weave sustainability into our culture, from more carbon-aware everyday choices to practical initiatives that reduce our environmental impact. It’s a team effort, and we want to thank everyone who has supported this journey so far, whether through completing the training, making pledges, or simply choosing to do things a little differently.

Emily Smith, CEO at Argyll, said: “Bronze accreditation marks an important step in Argyll’s sustainability journey, and one we’re genuinely proud of. We’re already building towards Silver, and with the culture of carbon awareness growing across our teams, I believe we’re laying the right foundations to achieve our goal of net zero by 2040.”

A word from The Carbon Literacy Project

Dave Coleman, Co-Founder and Managing Director of The Carbon Literacy Project, said:

“Carbon Literacy is an essential skill, vital to every workplace, community, and place of study. It is the foundational knowledge, and a catalyst to empowering people to act on climate. The actions taken and pledged by learners as part of their Carbon Literacy have an immediate impact within their organisation – however it is the maintenance of these and further actions, supported by Carbon Literate organisational culture, that reaps the greatest rewards. By becoming a Bronze accredited Carbon Literate Organisation, Argyll has demonstrated its commitment to genuine low carbon action, environmental and economic impact, and the building of a low carbon future for us all.”

What’s next

Bronze is just the beginning. With 60 colleagues now trained and working through their pledges, we have a strong foundation to build on as we set our sights on Silver accreditation. We are committed to continuing this work – growing the number of Carbon Literate colleagues across the business, deepening our ESG commitments, and embedding low-carbon thinking into everything we do.
